About the Artist

Sompop Budtarad (Thai, b. 1957) is a contemporary painter whose practice is deeply rooted in the spiritual, cultural, and natural rhythms of Thailand. Trained at the prestigious Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University, where he received his B.F.A. in 1980, Budtarad belongs to a lineage of artists shaped by both academic discipline and cultural consciousness.

Between 1986 and 1992, he participated in the mural painting project at Buddhapadipa Temple in London — a significant international undertaking — collaborating with renowned Thai artists such as Chalermchai Kositpipat and Panya Wijinthanasarn. This period further refined his sensitivity to narrative, symbolism, and spiritual expression within visual art.

Artistic Language & Philosophy

Budtarad’s work moves beyond representation — it is an exploration of:

  • Spiritual awareness

  • The impermanence of life

  • The relationship between humanity and nature

  • The preservation of cultural identity

His paintings are often quiet, grounded, and contemplative, reflecting a worldview where material and spirit coexist.

Signature Practice — “Born from the Earth”

One of his most distinctive bodies of work, “Born from the Earth,” reveals a profound conceptual gesture.

Using soil-based pigments, Budtarad creates portraits of individuals across all walks of life — from royalty to farmers — rendered in the same humble material.

In doing so, he dissolves hierarchy.

All return to the same earth.
All emerge from the same ground.

The medium itself becomes meaning.

Artwork Narrative (ARTISTRY SG Positioning)

Budtarad’s works are not meant to impress at first glance.
They invite you to slow down.

There is a stillness within his compositions — a quiet presence that does not demand attention, but gradually reveals itself.

His subjects are often simple, familiar, even ordinary.

Yet within them lies something deeper:

A sense of grounding.
A reminder of origin.
A connection to something beyond the visible.

These are not paintings of life —
they are reflections on existence.

Recognition & Collections

Budtarad has exhibited widely across Thailand in both solo and group exhibitions. His works are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA Bangkok), affirming his significance within Thailand’s contemporary art landscape.

Collector Positioning (ARTISTRY SG)

This is a body of work for collectors who value:

  • Depth over spectacle

  • Meaning over decoration

  • Quiet presence over visual noise

Placed within a space, Budtarad’s paintings do not dominate —
they anchor the environment with calm, humility, and reflection.
