Peh Eng Seng is a distinguished second-generation Singaporean artist, widely recognised for his evocative watercolours that document the nation’s evolving landscapes. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1963, Peh began his career in commercial art before dedicating himself fully to painting in 1983.
Working primarily en plein air, Peh captures fleeting moments with immediacy and sensitivity, translating everyday scenes into enduring visual records. His works often depict kampongs, street markets, and historic shophouses—spaces that once defined Singapore’s social and cultural fabric, but have gradually faded with rapid urbanisation.
Peh’s practice has been recognised through exhibitions at venues such as the Hyatt Hotel Singapore and the Oriental Hotel Singapore, as well as participation in major events including the Singapore Festival of Arts. His accolades include the Australian Art Award (1985) and IBM Art Award (1986), and his works are held in important collections such as the National Gallery Singapore and Singtel. A senior member of the Singapore Watercolour Society, Peh remains a vital figure in preserving Singapore’s visual heritage.
This market scene presents a vivid yet understated portrayal of Southeast Asian street life. Shophouses anchor the composition, while improvised canopies, rusted rooftops, and makeshift stalls create a layered, lived-in environment. Figures move fluidly through the space—buying, selling, and passing through—captured with loose, expressive brushwork that prioritises atmosphere over detail.
The palette is notably restrained, dominated by cool blues and muted greys. While these tones suggest the softness of a rainy day, they also carry a deeper emotional resonance—a quiet sense of disappearance. The familiar rhythms of market life, once commonplace, are rendered here as something increasingly rare.
Balancing realism with impressionistic sensitivity, Peh Eng Seng transforms an everyday scene into a poignant visual memory. The work stands not only as a record of place, but as a reflection on time—capturing the fragile beauty of a Singapore in transition.
